Diwali is a five-day festival of light celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and others around the world.

It’s one of the most colourful, happiest and important festivals in Indian and Sri Lanka culture taking place in houses and temples. Diwali is a time where traditional foods, dry fruits and sweets are shared among family and friends. It is also the period when children hear ancient stories, legends, myths about battles between good and evil or light and darkness from their parents and elders. Many families go shopping and create rangoli and other creative patterns on floors, near doors and walkways.  Homes are often decorated in colourful lights and candles, cleaned the night before, followed by an evening display of fireworks.

The festival is normally celebrated sometime in late October through early November. Diwali is celebrated on Day 3 of the five-day event. This year’s festival took place on October 23rd and many Indian/Tamil-Canadians celebrated across the country.
